The 3 Things You Actually Need to Start an Event Planning Business (Hint: It’s Not a Website)

I can’t tell you how many aspiring event planners have told me they’re not ready to launch because they don’t have a website yet. Or they’re waiting on business cards. Or they want to take one more course first. I understand the impulse, but none of those things will get you your first client. Let’s talk about what actually will.

The Myth of the Perfect Launch

Our industry has a problem. We’re planners, we love details, preparation, and making everything look beautiful before we present it to the world. That instinct serves your clients beautifully. It can quietly kill your business before it starts.

The ‘perfect launch’ is a moving target. There will always be one more thing to tweak, one more thing to add, one more reason to wait. The only way to break the cycle is to get clear on what actually matters and launch with that.

The 3 Things That Actually Matter

  • 1. The name of your business. It doesn’t have to be permanent. I’ve changed my business name five times in 15 years. Just pick something and move forward.
  • 2. The services you’re offering. Will you do full-service weddings? Corporate events? Non-profit galas? Partial planning? Pick a starting point.
  • 3. A clear sense of who you want to work with. Not everyone. A specific type of client whose events excite you and whose budget works for your goals.

What Can Wait (For Now)

  • A custom website – social media and a simple Google listing work just fine when you’re starting out.
  • Printed materials – digital is faster and more cost-effective for early clients.
  • Certifications – experience and results matter far more in this industry.
  • A full team – you can start solo and bring in assistants as your business grows.

Why Starting Early Beats Starting Perfect

Every event you plan gives you data. You learn what you love, what drains you, what your clients actually need, and how long things really take. That information is priceless, and you can’t get it by sitting on the sidelines waiting for the right moment.

Your business will become more refined, more focused, and more profitable over time. But it can only become those things if it exists first.

The truth is, most successful event planning businesses don’t start with polished branding or a perfectly curated online presence. They start with conversations. Your first clients are often people who already know, like, and trust you – friends, family members, former colleagues, community connections, or vendors you’ve worked with in other capacities. Instead of spending weeks perfecting a logo, spend that time telling people what you’re doing. Share your services on social media, attend local networking events, connect with venues and vendors, and let your network know you’re accepting clients. Visibility creates opportunities, and opportunities create experience. Experience is what ultimately builds a thriving event planning business.

One More Thing

If someone asked you today, ‘What do you do?,’ could you answer them clearly and confidently with a sentence about your event planning business? If yes, you’re ready to launch. Let’s go.
