You can have the most beautiful Instagram grid, the most polished website, and the most carefully crafted elevator pitch, and still lose clients to a planner who has none of those things but exudes confidence when they get on the phone. Confidence closes. Everything else just opens the door.
What Confidence Communicates to Clients
When you speak about your services with confidence, your pricing, your process, your scope boundaries, clients hear competence. They feel safe. Planning an event or wedding is an enormous emotional and financial investment, and clients want to hand it to someone who makes them feel like it’s in good hands.
Hesitation, on the other hand, raises questions. If you say your price and then immediately offer to ‘work something out,’ you’ve just told the client that your price isn’t real. That’s a trust signal in the wrong direction.
Borrow Confidence While You Build It
Here’s what I want you to hear: confidence doesn’t require experience. It can be borrowed from preparation.
When you have a professional process, clear scripts for your consultation calls, a strong proposal template, and a solid contract, you have something to stand behind. You’re not winging it; you’re executing a system. That knowledge, alone, gives you a posture that reads as confident even when you’re terrified on the inside.
Confidence in Pricing
This is the biggest arena where I see new planners lose clients, not because their price is too high, but because of how they deliver it. When you state your fee and then immediately add qualifiers, offer discounts, or apologize, you communicate that the number you just said isn’t really the number.
State your fee clearly. Pause. Let the client respond. Silence after a price quote is normal and healthy. You don’t have to fill it. Let your price stand on its own.
Confidence in Scope and Boundaries
Confident planners set boundaries without apology. When a client asks for something outside the agreed scope, a confident response is: ‘That falls outside what we originally agreed to, I’d be happy to add it for [fee]. Would you like me to put that together?’
That’s not harsh. It’s professional. And clients who respect your boundaries are almost always your best clients.
How to Build Your Confidence Intentionally
- Know your numbers and own them.
- Practice your consultation script out loud before real calls.
- Invest in professional templates, contracts, and proposals that signal expertise.
- Get coaching, having someone in your corner who believes in you is a confidence accelerator.
- Celebrate small wins regularly to reinforce forward momentum.
And finally, another often-overlooked area where confidence shows up is in your follow-up and communication after the initial inquiry. Many new planners unintentionally undermine themselves by over-checking in, over-explaining, or repeatedly “just following up” without adding new value. Confident communication is calm, intentional, and timed. You share a proposal, you confirm next steps, and then you allow space for the client to process. You don’t chase to prove your worth, you stay available because you already established it. The same applies to nonverbal cues on sales calls: your tone, pacing, and willingness to pause all signal authority.
When you rush to fill silence, you often do it out of discomfort, but clients interpret it as uncertainty. Learning to sit comfortably in those pauses, speak slowly when discussing pricing, and keep your energy steady throughout the conversation is what separates “interested” from “booked.”
