Your business name is the first impression you make. Your brand is what makes you memorable. Your positioning is what makes clients choose you over everyone else. Getting these three things right early can save you years of frustration, and help you attract exactly the clients you want from day one.
Naming Your Business: Practical Over Perfect
Here’s some reassurance: you don’t have to nail your business name on the first try. I’ve changed mine five times over 15 years. The most important thing is to pick a name that feels like you, is easy to spell and remember, and isn’t already in use in your market.
You have two main options: a personal brand (your own name, like Jane Smith Events) or a company name (like Bloom & Gather Productions). Both can work beautifully. A personal brand builds your profile as an expert. A company name can feel more established and scalable.
Brand Identity: What It Is and What It Isn’t
Your brand identity is not just your logo or your Instagram aesthetic (though those matter). It’s the complete picture of how your business looks, sounds, and feels to the people you’re trying to attract.
Think about your target clients. Are they minimalist luxury brides? Bold, colorful corporate companies? Eco-conscious couples? Your brand should speak directly to them, visually and verbally.
Key Brand Decisions to Make Early
- Your brand colors (2–3 is enough to start).
- Your fonts (consistent typography signals professionalism).
- Your brand voice (formal and polished vs. warm and approachable).
- Your core message (what you do, who you serve, and why you’re different).
One of the biggest mistakes new business owners make is trying to appeal to everyone. When your brand messaging is too broad, potential clients struggle to see why you’re the right fit for their event. Instead, focus on creating a clear client profile.
Think about the types of events you genuinely enjoy producing, the budgets you want to work with, and the personalities of the clients you connect with best. The more specific you become, the easier it is to create marketing that resonates. This doesn’t mean you will only ever work with one type of client, but having a clear ideal audience helps guide every decision, from your website copy and social media content to the vendors you network with and the services you choose to offer.
Strong brands aren’t built by being everything to everyone; they’re built by being the obvious choice for the right people.
Positioning: The Difference Between ‘Another Planner’ and ‘The Planner’
Positioning is about standing out in a crowded market. What makes you different? Maybe it’s your background in film and television production. Maybe it’s your deep network of vendors in a specific city. Maybe it’s your specialty in multicultural weddings. Whatever it is, own it loudly and consistently.
When you’re clear on your positioning, your marketing becomes easier, your proposals feel more confident, and clients who find you feel like they’ve found exactly what they were looking for.
The Planner Differentiator Worth Owning
One positioning strategy I always recommend: lead with being a producer, not just a planner. A planner manages details. A producer manages the entire experience, the vision, the storytelling, the logistics, and the moment-by-moment execution.
If you can articulate that distinction, you immediately elevate your value in the eyes of potential clients and command higher fees.
