Let me say this directly: you will never feel 100% ready to start your event planning business. Not when you take one more course. Not when your website is perfect. Not when you’ve assisted at five more weddings for free. Readiness is built in the doing, not before it.
The Fear Is Normal. Acting Anyway Is the Differentiator.
Every single planner who has ever built a successful event business started before they felt fully prepared. I did. My students do. The fear of not knowing everything, of not looking polished enough, of not being taken seriously, that’s universal. It never fully goes away.
But here’s what I know after 30+ years in this industry: confidence doesn’t come first. It comes from taking action, learning, and building a track record.
What ‘Not Ready’ Is Really Costing You
- Potential clients who need someone exactly like you, right now.
- Revenue that could be funding your life and your business growth.
- Experience and testimonials that only come from real clients.
- Momentum, clarity, and the joy of doing work you love.
Too many aspiring planners spend months, and sometimes years, preparing for a business they never actually launch. They stay busy designing logos, tweaking social media profiles, and researching competitors, all while avoiding the one thing that creates real progress: serving clients. Preparation has its place, but at some point it becomes procrastination dressed up as productivity.
The truth is that your first few clients will teach you more than any course ever could. You’ll learn how to manage expectations, solve problems under pressure, communicate with vendors, and deliver exceptional experiences. These lessons can’t be fully learned in theory. They come from being in the arena, making decisions, and discovering that you’re capable of handling more than you thought.
The Real Goal: Borrow Confidence While You Build Competence
You don’t have to pretend you know everything. You just have to show up professionally, communicate clearly, and have systems in place that make your clients feel taken care of.
A strong proposal process, clear communication guidelines, and a professional intake form create the impression of an established business, even when you’re brand new. These tools don’t require years of experience. They require preparation. And that’s exactly what a structured launch process gives you.
Remember, clients aren’t hiring you because you’re perfect. They’re hiring you because they believe you can help them solve a problem and create an unforgettable event. Most clients care far more about responsiveness, organization, and professionalism than they do about how many years you’ve been in business. When you focus on delivering value and creating a positive experience, your reputation begins to grow naturally.
Two Steps to Take This Week
- Step 1: Write down the name of your business, your core service offering, and your target client in two sentences each. That’s your foundation.
- Step 2: Tell three people in your network what you’re doing and ask if they know anyone who could use your services. That’s your first marketing move.
You Are More Ready Than You Think
If you love events, understand what it takes to create a memorable experience, and are willing to learn the business side as you go, you are qualified to start. Period.
The planners who succeed aren’t the most experienced ones. They’re the most committed ones.
