How to Use Your Existing Network to Book Your First Event Planning Client

You don’t need 10,000 Instagram followers to book your first client. You don’t need a Google ad campaign, a viral reel, or a feature on a wedding blog. Your first client is almost certainly already in your network, you just haven’t told them you’re open for business yet.

Your Network Is More Powerful Than You Think

Think about everyone you know: family members, friends, colleagues, neighbors, former co-workers, people from your gym, people from your place of worship, parents from your kids’ school. Now think about the weddings, birthday parties, corporate events, fundraisers, and celebrations happening in those circles this year.

Someone you know, or someone they know, needs an event planner. The only thing standing between you and that first booking is a clear message and the confidence to share it.

The Announcement Formula

When you announce your business to your network, you’re not just sharing news, you’re making a specific ask. The most effective announcements combine three things: what you do, who you serve, and exactly how someone can refer a client to you.

Something like: ‘I’ve launched [Business Name], an event planning company specializing in [your niche]. My ideal clients are [description]. If you know someone planning [type of event], I’d love an introduction.’ That’s it. Simple, specific, and actionable.

Where to Share It

  • Personal social media (Facebook and Instagram are powerful for network-based outreach).
  • A personal email to your closest contacts with a warm, specific ask.
  • Text messages to friends and family who know people in your target market.
  • LinkedIn if you’re targeting corporate clients.
  • In-person conversations, don’t underestimate them.

The Two-Week Launch Push

I recommend dedicating two focused weeks to your launch. Build anticipation: tease that something exciting is coming. Reveal your business name. Share your niche and services. Then make the referral ask directly.

During this two-week period, you’ll be amazed at how many people come out of the woodwork to congratulate you, ask questions, and refer people your way. Your network wants to support you, give them a clear way to do it.

One mistake many new event planners make is assuming they need to appear fully established before they start talking about their business. In reality, people are often excited to support entrepreneurs in the early stages. Don’t wait until your website is perfect or your portfolio is extensive. Share your journey openly and professionally. People connect with authenticity, and they often remember the person who had the courage to start something new.

Another powerful strategy is to stay visible after your initial announcement. Most people won’t need an event planner the day they see your post, but they may need one three months from now. Continue sharing helpful planning tips, behind-the-scenes content, event inspiration, and business updates. Consistent visibility keeps you top of mind so that when an opportunity arises, your name is the first one people think of and recommend.

Follow Up and Follow Through

When someone makes a referral, respond quickly and warmly. When you get an inquiry from the referral, treat it like your most important client, because at that moment, they are. A great first experience generates your second client, your third referral, and the testimonial that builds your reputation.

Remember, your first client is rarely the result of a complicated marketing strategy. More often, it’s the result of a conversation, a connection, and a willingness to let people know what you do. Start with the relationships you already have, serve those clients exceptionally well, and let word-of-mouth become the foundation of your growing event planning business.
